Zhang was one of a dozen resurrected SecOps mercenaries as part of Project Phoenix. He was a Recombinant member of the 1st Recom Unit under the command of Recom Quaritch.

Biography

Zhang was once a human SecOps operative serving under Colonel Miles Quaritch in 2154. At some point during the Battle of Ayram Alusìng he was killed in action. Two hours prior to his death, Zhang had his memories uploaded onto a Soul Drive, which was then sent back to Earth during the expulsion of the Resources Development Administration from Pandora. This copied consciousness was then downloaded into Zhang's Recombinant in 2169 aboard the ISV Vindicator.

Recom Zhang for awakening Miles Quaritch onboard the ISV Vindicator, alongside Lyle Wainfleet, Sean Fike and Zdinarsik, who were presumably the first recons awakened. He, Fike and Zdinarsik had to restrain their commander, who was disoriented and aggressive from the process, while Wainfleet had to explain the situation.

When the recom unit tried to capture the Sully children and was ambushed by Jake, Neytiri and Neteyam, Zhang attempted to restrain Lo'ak. Lo'ak viciously bit Zhang's arm in order to be freed. Zhang then tried to kill Neytiri but was shot in the back by Neteyam with an arrow. Zhang is the fifth recombinant and last to die during the ambush.

Trivia

• In the film's screenplay, Zhang orders the Sully children to freeze and to drop their weapons, even firing his gun above their heads to frighten them. Quaritch also has Kiri held hostage by Zhang, who painfully holds her hostage. Zhang is still killed by Neteyam like the final film.
• Recom Zhang's death parallels the death of human Zhang, who previously died during the Battle of Ayram Alusìng; both versions of the character were killed within the same area of the Pandoran forest 15 years apart while being commanded by their equivalent version of the character Colonel Miles Quaritch.
