The Tulkun Way is an ancient philosophy created by the tulkun, a race of sentient, whale-like creatures of Pandora.
History[]
During the time of the The First Songs, the earliest recollections of Na'vi history, the tulkuns were violent creatures who fought amongst themselves for territory and revenge. At some point, the tulkuns gave up this way of life and adopted a pacifistic nature wherein all forms of killing are strictly outlawed, even if the killing is justified, such as in the case of self-defense. Thusly, any tulkuns who go against the Tulkun Way and kill are outcast from the tulkuns. Due to the kinship between the tulkuns and the oceanic Metkayina clan, any outcast tulkuns are similarly rejected and shunned by the Metkayina.
Payakan's Banishment[]
Payakan was outcast from the tulkuns when he led a group of tulkuns and Na'vi against the Resources Development Administration in retaliation of them killing his mother, which ultimately led to the deaths of most of the war party. After helping in the Skirmish at the Three Brothers, Payakan attempts to rally the other young tulkuns of the clan near the Metkayina to join him, causing him to be forced to leave the area entirely for his continued defiance.
When the RDA begins hunting in earnest, Payakan and Lo'ak bring Ta'nok, the sole survivor of her clan, before the Matriarch to make the case for the tulkun to fight to defend themselves. Although Payakan's exile means that he is not allowed to speak, Lo'ak and his friends defense of Lo'ak's spirit brother gets the Matriarch to hear him out. After hearing Ta'nok's story, the Matriarch agrees and personally leads the fight against the RDA in the Battle at the Cove of the Ancestors.
After the RDA's defeat, Payakan's banishment is lifted.
